This long exposure captures the fleeting impressions of a pair of shorebirds as they move about during sunset with the deepness of the shadow showing the time the birds spent in each stance.
Open Space Over Mt. Muir
The Milky Way rises over Mt. Muir and Mt. Whitney, as seen from the Mt. Whitney Trail Camp. The grand vista makes 14,000ft not seem so high up anymore.
Evening at a Mountain Lake
Sunset fades into blue hour at the Mt. Whitney Trail Camp as the stillness in the air starts to translate into stillness of the campers.
The galactic center (right) rose just before sunrise (left blue glow), leaving just a sliver of time where this photo could be taken out in the deep Mojave desert lands where city glow (yellow all around) is at a minimum.
Sunset from the Dollar Lake campground looked almost like a raging wildfire in the distance.
Even in the darkest area of Sheephole Valley Wilderness area, the sky always has city glow. In this case, it was just barely dark enough to see the Milky Way, which may soon be a lost sight in the developed world.
Dry Lake City Glow
A long exposure of the night sky captures the motion of the stars and the stillness of the trees, back-lit by light pollution from Los Angeles.
Tree by Moonlight
The view of a moonlit tree from below as clouds and stars streak overhead.
A clear night, a full moon, and a new telescope adapter combined to a fun night of photography, capturing lots of detail on the pockmarked surface of our moon.
Oncoming cars head on, waiting at a stoplight give a feeling of staring you down.
Camping in Death Valley, we were treated to a full night of great stargazing. A completely different experience from the city skies we're used to!
The Lonely Lot
A single car parked on the roof of a parking garage was almost perfectly positioned to reflect the light in this moody night-time shot. The dimly lit stairwell in the distance to the left provides a nice counterpoint as your eye begins wandering the frame.
UCI Paths at Night
The central park at the University of California, Irvine campus at night. Lots of interesting, trees seem to soak up the ambient light from all the path lights scattered around.
Harvest Moon over the Irvine Hills
A passing car's taillights gave an interesting red glow in the lower left as the red-yellow harvest moon (sometimes called a blood moon) rose over some hills in Irvine.
In the Shadow of Stars
Late at night staring up to the stars above my campsite, I leaned back, propped the camera on some rocks, and took a photo from my calm, cold viewpoint.
